Park Board Told Of PPK Results

Members of the Archbold Park Board were told four Archbold youths will travel to Cleveland, Sunday, Dec. 1, to participate in the Punt, Pass & Kick competition.

The board was given the information at its Wednesday, Oct. 30 meeting.

The four advanced from a regional competition held in Archbold.

Of the 34 youngsters competing at Archbold, DJ Newman and Nellie Miller, both of Archbold, swept the boys and girls titles in the 10- and 11-year-old age group.

Andrew Hogrefe and Leah Hall, both of Archbold, were the winners in the 12- and 13-year-old group.

Jennifer Kidder, director of the Archbold Department of Parks & Recreation, told the park board there are over 50 third- and fourthgrade youngsters signed up for volleyball.

But, there were not a lot of fifth and sixth graders.

She said she needs a couple more coaches for the volleyball program.

Volleyball is normally a fall sport. Due to scheduling issues, it works out better to start the program now, she said.

Church league basketball starts this week.

Scout Cabin

Kidder said work is to start anytime on renovations to the Scout Cabin in Ruihley Park. Materials have been ordered.

She also asked board members about obtaining quotes to have a new roof put on the building.

The roof is 17 years old.

“It’s not beautiful, but it’s okay,” she said.

When the exterior of the building is fixed up, the roof will look worse, she said.

The board granted approval by consensus.

The board also discussed new vinyl siding on the pool house building. It will eliminate the need to paint the building, she said.

Tennis Courts

Vaughn Bentz, village councilman and park board member, asked about quotes to remove the old tennis courts in Memorial Park.

Due to the nature of the soil in the area, Park Board was never able to put down a surface that would not crack.

Troy Double, parks and recreation maintenance supervisor, said the village water department has an attachment for a backhoe tractor that can break apart concrete, so it’s possible the work could be done without hiring a contractor.

Plans are to remove the fencing around the courts but leave the lights and windbreaking trees in place.

Kidder said the board received a thank-you letter for putting new sand in the digger pits at the Ruihley Park Kiddie Korral.

Board members Moses Rodriguez and Kevin Morton were absent from the meeting.

The next board meeting is Wednesday, Dec. 4, 8:15 pm, in Archbold council chambers.
