Otsego Wins Streak Spike-Tacular

After finishing as runnerup last year, Otsego (15-3) won its first Streak Spike- Tacular title, Saturday, Sept. 27, in the Thunderdome, beating Kidron Central Christian, Tinora, and Archbold.

The Streaks (10-7) were runners-up.

Tinora was third, and Pettisville (12-5) was fourth.

Archbold has won the title 10 times. KCC won the title eight times, and Antwerp has won once since the tourney began in 1995.

“Overall we did some nice things today. We made too many errors against a nice Otsego team and we weren’t able to get our game going consistently,” said Kylie Rufenacht, AHS head coach.

Cayla Walker and Natalie Rupp, Archbold, and Dana Fricke, Pettisville were among players named to the All-Tournament Team.

AHS Def. Antwerp 25-21, 25-21

The Streaks beat the Archers in their first match of the day.

Pettisville defeated the Cadets in their first match.

AHS Def. PHS 27-25, 25-21

The first game was tight throughout, with neither team leading by more than three points at any time.

Archbold led 22-20 when the Birds scored three straight points to take a 23- 22 lead.

After the Streaks tied the score at 23, a Kate Kauffman dink put PHS at game point, 24-23.

Natalie Rupp’s kill for AHS tied the score at 24.

With the score tied at 25, Cayla Walker’s spike bounced off the Pettisville blocker for a point and a Blackbird error at game point gave AHS a 27-25 victory.

The second game was again a tight one. Archbold had a five-point advantage, 18-13, but the Birds clawed their way back to within one, 21-20 before AHS outscored PHS 4-1 to win the match.

Tinora Def. PHS 25-15, 25-16

The Rams defeated the Birds in the match that determined third place.

Tinora took control in both games, forcing numerous Pettisville errors.

Serving: K. Kauffman 7-7; Pursel 6-6; Fricke 6-7. Team: 27-31.

Digs: Hubby 10. Team: 28.

Setting: K. Kauffman 23-24, 8 assists; Bontrager 21-21, 4 assists. Team: 46-47.

Attacks: Fricke 16-19, 5 kills; Pursel 16-20, 4 kills. Team: 47-56, 13 kills.

Otsego Def. AHS 25-14, 25-20

In a rematch of 2013, the Knights and Blue Streaks were playing for the title.

The result was the exact opposite, however.

With the score tied at 8 in the first game, Otsego took the lead for good when an Archbold spike went long.

The Knights built their lead to nine points, 20-11, before winning 25-14.

Archbold led 7-5 in the second game when Otsego ran off six straight points and took the lead for good.

Archbold closed to within two and was down 21-19, but a Mauren Wynn kill gave the serve back to the Knights.

An ace gave Otsego a fourpoint advantage, 23-19.

Macey Rupp’s kill brought AHS back to within three, 23-20, but the Knights finished out the match with two straight points for their first Spike-Tacular title.

Setting: Fricke 21-22, 5 assists; Ziegler 23-24, 5 assists. Team: 77-79, 12 assists.
