Delaware County has hit upon a way to help ensure that paramedics have all the information they need when they are called to the home of a person with special medical needs.

The county voluntary medical registry allows residents to arm emergency medical workers with details of their condition that could mean the difference between life and death for someone who is disabled or has chronic health problems.

Residents register online and are visited by emergency personnel to gather appropriate information, so that should the need arise, medics will be ready.

Marion and Fairfield counties are putting together registries, and a spokesman for Franklin County Emergency Management Agency said Delaware County’s registry is worth studying.

Implementation of such a registry in a county as populous as Franklin would likely be more difficult than it would be in Delaware County. But the idea is worth study.–Columbus Dispatch
