Opportunity Knocks At Pettisville

Remember the old saying about opportunity knocks- but you must open the door?

For residents of the Pettisville School District, opportunity is knocking, in the form of a $17.6 million grant to build a new $21.4 million school building.

To get their share of the money Ohio has set aside to build new schools, Pettisville School District voters must approve a $4.83 million bond issue. The levy to repay the bonds would average 7.86 mills, which includes a half-mill to maintain the new structure.

These are indeed difficult financial times, and 7.86 mills is a big bite.

Voters in the Pettisville school district have always supported their schools, including voting an income tax on themselves and reaching into their own pockets to build a new gym-library-office addition, without a dime of tax money.

Now, they have a chance to build an all-new, energy-efficient, state-of-theart school, that will utilize the gym addition, for less than 20% of the actual cost. It sounds like a bargain.

An offer like this may never become available again. Pettisville may get one chance, one shot, to share in the state school-building funds.

Opportunity is indeed knocking at Pettisville. On Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 4, Pettisville School District voters ought to cast ballots to open the door.
