A fire on Aug. 30, 1913, destroyed almost an entire block of downtown Archbold. Approximately one-half of the business section on the east side of North Defiance Street was lost. Losses were determined at $175,000; approximately 20 buildings were destroyed. Firemen came from Toledo, Wauseon, Bryan, and Ridgeville Corners to help Archbold firemen battle the blaze. In the middle are the walls of the Whitehorn Bros. hardware store. At left is the wall of the Henry Hirsch building, and crumbling timber of the Gype & Buehrer furniture store.– Antique photo from the Archbold Buckeye archives
