A drilling rig south of Fayette has reportedly struck small pockets of oil, “but it’s not like we’ve turned into the state of Texas,” said Steve Blue, Fayette village administrator.
Last week, residents and property owners in the Fayette area began receiving letters from Emerson Geophysical, LLC, seeking permission to place equipment such as “seismic boxes and geophones” on people’s property.
“People should be cautious when they receive these letters,” he said.
“They should not sign over their mineral rights for small amounts of money.”
Emerson Geophysical is located in Traverse City, Mich. A call to the company’s Traverse City office was not returned.
Blue said the drilling rig is located south of Fayette off of St. Rt. 66.
“You can see it from the highway, especially at night when the lights are on,” he said.
He said the rig, which has been in operation for a couple of months, has reached its maximum depth and was starting horizontal drilling, “radiating out” from the original well.
