The Ohio High School Athletic Association will host a press conference at 12 noon, Thursday, March 19.
Jerry Snodgrass, OHSAA director, will provide updates and information on the winter sports tournaments that were postponed indefinitely last week, along with updates on spring sports.
A memo sent from Snodgrass Friday afternoon, March 13, to all OHSAA member school administrators stated that remaining winter sports tournaments were postponed indefinitely.
That includes state wrestling, girls basketball, and ice hockey tournaments, and regional boys basketball tournaments.
The postponement is related to the order of Mike DeWine, Ohio governor, closing schools through at least April 3 because of the Coronavirus outbreak.
“Given the rapidly changing events nationally and statewide, we are assessing the situation daily,” the memo said. “It is impossible to make a determination today… the reason for continuing them to be ‘postponed.’
“Further, we have implemented indefinitely a no-contact period, which prohibits any coach, paid or volunteer, approved by the Board of Education, to provide coaching, instruction or supervising conditioning and physical fitness programs or open gyms to members of a school team in their sports.”
A mandatory no-contact period is in effect for all school-sponsored sports through April 5.
There is also a mandatory shutdown of facilities used for the purpose of conducting athletic activities through April 5.
The OHSAA Non-Interscholastic Rule is still applicable to all athletes, including for those in spring sports.
For spring sport athletes, they are in violation of the rule if they participate in any non-school sport in the same season if they have already participated in a scrimmage or contest for the school team in that sport.
With a return to school tentatively set for April 6, the following schedule has been set and is subject to change:
April 6-10: Mandatory practices and/or acclimatization (if required).
April 11: All scrimmages/ regular-season contests may begin.
Tournaments will remain on dates as currently scheduled.
