NWOAL Track Meet Runs This Week

The Archbold boys team is the favorite to repeat as champions in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League track meet this week.

Wauseon won the girls meet in 2009.

Preliminaries were scheduled to run last night Tuesday, with field events and the finals of the 4×800-meter relay. The rest of the finals are Friday, May 14, beginning at 7 p.m. The meet is held at Evergreen High School.

“We are the favorites, but we have to perform,” said John Downey, AHS head coach. “We can’t show up and go through the motions.

“After leagues, this starts the tournament trail. We can’t rest on our laurels. There is work to be done, and we are improving with every week.

“We have some excellent seniors in Nate Hammersmith and Josh Meyers. Nate, as a three-time state qualifier, has the talent and experience to advance. Meyers is coming on strong and is improving in the discus.”

Jacob Badenhop is also a senior on the boys team.

“But our strength is our overall talent and depth. We’re strong in the long jump, 100, 200, and 400. Our 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relays are faster now than the same time last year.

“But they all have to improve in order to advance every week.”

Archbold champions last year include all four relay teams and Noah Keefer in the 800.

Archbold champions last year on the girls side were Autumn Lantz in the 100, 200, and 400; and the 4×100, 4×200, and 4×400 relay teams.–Donald Young and
