NSCC President Moves On

Betty Young is leaving Northwest State Community College, rural Archbold. She has been president since September 2003.

Young incited many reactions during her tenure. Some reached extremes; there are those who love her and those who don’t.

Young brought new ideas and a new leadership style to Northwest State. She made changes, hired new people, and made things happen. She took what some thought was a sleepy little community college and shook it from its slumber.

Young did make positive changes and pushed progressive agendas. But, at best, some things seemed questionable.

Satellite campuses are a good idea, but the old, fire-damaged Metamora high school was perhaps not the best selection. Renovation costs are way over budget, and the project is stalled.

Turning over the operation of the NSCC child development center to another agency, may have made sense somewhere, but its cost in employee relations was high.

The Lessons for Leno tour raised eyebrows. Young took a motorcycle trip to California to talk to the late-night talk show host/comedian, who made fun of community colleges.

Was it her responsibility to challenge him? Was it sensible and worthwhile, or a publicity stunt? Who benefited… Northwest State or Betty Young?

Contract negotiations have continued over a year between the college and its teachers. There’s probably plenty of blame to go around, but months and months without a contract is wrong.

Young may be called many things, but she’s not lazy or an underachiever. She’s a go-getter, a leader who may have stumbled a time or two. Her stumbles came while pushing NSCC forward, which is forgivable.

Now, she will ride her motorcycle to the 25,000-student Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College in North Carolina and use her leadership skills there.

Much success to Betty.
