No Extra Holiday For Village Workers

Archbold Village Council won’t authorize an extra paid holiday for village workers in lieu of a raise. That was a good council decision.

No one wants to be a scrooge, but hard times force hard measures. In the private sector, how many employees have gone without raises… some, for several years? How many have taken cuts in pay or hours? How many have no job at all? Were they given an extra paid holiday, just because they didn’t get a raise?

Private sector taxes support public agencies. Tough times drive down profits and tax revenues. The village income tax alone is down 12%.

Members of the council finance committee– Ed Leininger, Kevin Morton, and Jeff Fryman– are all businessmen. Did they come up with the paid holiday idea? Who did?

Then the Archbold Library Board decides to hand out $100 to each employee instead of a raise. The board has cut, cut, and cut. Granted, $100 isn’t a lot, but where did it find the gift money?

Soon, Archbold Area School Board will negotiate with the Archbold Education Association, the teacher’s union. The union will want a raise on top of step raises, the automatic, built-in pay hikes many teachers get for another year of experience.

Study the lesson of Fulton County government workers: they’re getting a pay cut equal to 80 hours, and keeping their jobs.
