New Mexican Restaurant Coming To Archbold

Ramon Macias, owner of Casa Vieja, a family-style Mexican restaurant in Defiance, said he plans to open an Archbold location near the first of the new year.

Macias said the restaurant will open in the commercial strip center in the 1200 block of S. Defiance St. owned by David Manahan, Archbold.

Vacant Space

He said he and Manahan have negotiated an agreement under which Manahan will finish the interior of the remaining vacant space in the strip center to restaurant configuration, including a kitchen and restrooms.

“Right now, it’s just four walls. Everything will be brand new,” Macias said.

Construction will be one of the determining factors of the opening date. The second, Macias said, is permits, licenses, and other paperwork.

A liquor permit request for the restaurant came before Archbold Village Council, Monday night, Aug. 17. Council voted not to request a hearing on the permit request before the State Liquor Control Board.

Council cannot control whether or not Casa Vieja will receive a liquor permit; that decision is up to the State of Ohio’s Department of Commerce, Division

of Liquor Control. Council had the option of either

requesting a hearing to oppose the liquor license application before the liquor control board, or not requesting a hearing.

Traditionally, council has not requested hearings.

While there will be a small bar in the restaurant, Macias said the restaurant will not focus on the bar business.

The menu will be the same offered in Defiance.

“Original Mexican food,” he said.

If the business goes well, it will bring six to eight new jobs, full- and part-time, to the village.

In This Economy?

When asked about expanding a business in the recession economy, Macias said, “Right now is the time to expand, because everything is easier.”

Permits and other requests are processed faster, and landlords are interested in making deals to fill vacant business spaces.

“If the economy was better, I wouldn’t be able to get that location at that price. They gave me a chance to do something.”

Plus, when the economy does turn around, “We’ll be established,” he said.
