Nafziger Is Resident Of The Month At Fairlawn




Marian Nafziger is the October Resident of the Month at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home, Archbold.

She was born to Jacob and Mary (Boshart) Christner on March 31, 1922. She grew up in Pigeon, Mich. with five brothers and four sisters. Marian worked for a banker’s wife doing housework and taking care of their two-year-old daughter; after that she pressed clothes at a drycleaners.

She met her husband, Freeman Nafziger, at Little Eden Christian Retreat Center. They were married on Feb. 9, 1947 at the Pigeon River Mennonite Church and celebrated 59 years together.

When Marian married, she moved to an 80-acre farm on St. Rt. 2 in Archbold and lived there until her husband passed away in January 2006. She moved to Fairlawn in March 2006.

They had four children: one daughter, Charlotte Stepp, Goshen, Ind.; and three sons, Roger, Charles and Ronald, who all live close by. They also have seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Marian kept a large garden and canned or froze most of the family’s food. Her family remembers her as being an excellent cook, and she was especially known for her cookies and preserves.

After her children were grown, she worked at Sheridan Manufacturing in Wauseon and as a cook at the Barn Restaurant, Archbold.

During leisure time she enjoyed making quilts; the last one was finished in 2006. Marian and Freeman were active members of the Tedrow Mennonite Church. Marian was involved with the Ladies Sewing Circle and was chairman of the kitchen committee.

The couple also enjoyed traveling and took trips to Florida, Arizona, Oregon, Hawaii and Michigan. Both were very involved in their grandchildren’s lives and attending their sports events.
