Mom, We Could Be Famous!

Garrett Beck, 7 1/2, son of Brock and Megan Beck, rural Ridgeville Township, found this huge caterpillar in his yard near a tree. He was pretty excited about his find and told his mom, “Send this to the news, we could be famous!” Turns out it is a Cecropia moth caterpillar. According to Internet research, all it does is eat, eat, eat, and grow, grow, grow– to the size of a small hotdog. Adult Cecropia moths, at right, do not eat and they don’t damage plants. They fly at night and have a lifespan of 60 days. This moth is prized by collectors and nature lovers alike for its large size and extremely showy appearance.– photos courtesy Megan Beck
