A kayaker who had gone missing on the Maumee River Wednesday night was located by Defiance County Sheriff deputies.
Cliff Vandemark, a lieutenant with the Defiance County Sheriff Department, said Josh Miller, 27, Archbold, and Brandon Burton, 27, rural Wauseon, had put their kayaks into the river at Paulding Co. Rd. 105 at about 8 pm Wednesday, June 21.
Vandemaerk said during the night, as the two paddled downstream, they became separated.
“It was pitch black out there,” Vandemark said.
At about 2:54 am, Vandemark said Miller paddled to shore, and used his cell phone to call the DCSD, reporting he had not seen Burton for an hour.
Vandemark said the Deputies called out the Delaware and Washington Township Fire Departments. Lights were set up on the Bend Road River Bridge.
Also, he said rescuers began walking the banks of the river, “as much as they could.”
Burton was located at about 4:44 am Thursday, when he arrived under the Bend Road River Bridge.
Vandemark said the Promedica Air helicopter ambulance was en route to assist in the search when Burton was found.
Neither Burton or Miller were uninjured, and were transported back to their vehicle.–posted 11:45 am
