Mediator To Assist In Archbold School District Contract Talks

The Archbold Area School Board and the Archbold Education Association, which represents district teachers in labor negotiations, said they will put their issues before a mediator.

The two sides have been negotiating a wage reopener in their master agreement since early last year.

“Because of the interest by both parties to allow for a careful and thoughtful decision, it has been mutually agreed upon to utilize the assistance of a third party, a neutral mediator, to help with the discussions,” said a press release.

David Deskins, district superintendent, issued the release, dated Thursday, Sept. 13.

“Out of respect for our cooperative efforts to find a suitable resolution for all parties, all negotiation team members have been asked not to respond to questions, or engage in discussions regarding the negotiations.

“Collectively, team members have agreed to make no comments other than the statements provided herein,” the release states.

Deskins declined to answer questions from the Archbold Buckeye.

Text

The release states, “In April and May 2007, pursuant to the negotiated agreement between the Archbold Education Association and the Archbold Area Local Schools Board of Education, discussions were held regarding the contract agreement to reconvene talks regarding salaries and benefits for the district teachers.

“This decision was made in April 2006, in light of the financial difficulties facing the district.

“The members of the two teams felt that reviewing the financial situation on a yearby year basis would prove more logical than trying to resolve issues for three years into the future.

“In May 2007, it was agreed by the two parties that a recess in the discussions was appropriate to allow for a distractionfree end to the 2006-07 school year for our students and our staff.”

Reconvene

“On Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007, the parties reconvened and continued discussions.

“Because of the interest by both parties to allow for a careful and thoughtful decision, it has been mutually agreed upon to utilize the assistance of a third party to help with the discussions.

“Steps are being taken to ar- range for the meeting in the coming weeks.”
