Rodney J. Bunce is a very lucky young man.
Bunce, a 19-year-old Archbold resident, drove into the side of a Norfolk Southern train on the afternoon of Tuesday, Oct. 26. Bunce told Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers the car’s brakes failed, and he couldn’t stop before hitting the train.
Through the grace of God, or just plain luck, Bunce survived the crash.
When cars and trains tangle, the result is usually death for those in the car. This area has a terrible history of lives lost in rail-crossing accidents.
But car-train crashes have nearly stopped after crossing gates and lights were installed. They’ve proven so effective, we run the risk of becoming complacent about crossing safety.
Bunce’s crash should serve notice to everyone, that car-train crashes still happen. Please remember to use caution at all crossings.
