Loyal Nofziger

Loyal A. Nofziger, born Oct. 5, 1925, in Archbold, passed away on March 21, 2012. He was 86.

Loyal was the only son of Harley and Fannie (Aeschliman) Nofziger, along with four sisters.

On Aug. 22, 1948, he married his sweetheart Donna Belle Short, and they enjoyed a wonderful 63 years together.

Loyal was a graduate of Archbold High School, Class of ’43. As a young adult, he traveled across the ocean, twice, with several young men, delivering horses as aide to the residents of Poland.

His love for farming was a passion he had until he retired at the age of 80.

He loved woodworking and creating parts for his machinery with his metal lathe.

His bass voice will be missed by those who shared his love for music.

He was a charter member of the quartet that was a part of St. John’s Christian Church; of which their friendships have lasted some 50 years. He was also a member of the barbershop chorus (Defiance Chapter) and an avid follower of their performances.

Loyal was a member of St. John’s Christian Church, where he served faithfully and in many numerous capacities, including an elder, congregational president and a regular/ substitute Sunday School teacher.

Loyal is survived by his wife; two sisters, Evelyn Nafziger and Valetta Frey; children, Joseph (Angela Rice), Connie (Mark Holsopple), Curtis (Judy Grieser), all of Archbold, and Deanna (David Black) of Middlebury, Ind.; 18 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren who will miss him greatly, but rejoice in his new home and a body that bears no more pain.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Lois Aeschliman and Lorene Eash.

Loyal’s “Celebration of Life” was held Saturday, March 24, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Christian Church with Pastors Erich Christman and Adam Just offi ciating. Interment at Lockport Cemetery preceded the service for the immediate family.

The family requests memorials be given to Fairlawn Haven or Gideon’s International.

The family wishes to publicly express their appreciation to the staff of Fairlawn for their excellent care to Loyal over the past months.
