Local School Board Hires Two Teachers

The Archbold Area School Board approved the hiring of Anne Main and Amy Johnson during a special meeting Thursday, June 26.

One-year contracts were approved for both.

David Deskins, district superintendent, said Main, formerly of the Mason Intermediate School, will become an elementary special education teacher in the Archbold Elementary School.

“She has many years of special education experience,” he said.

She is a Miami University (of Ohio) graduate.

Johnson is a Bowling Green State University graduate who has held long-term substitute positions. She will teach science on a half-time basis at Archbold High School.

Deskins said there is one opening to fill, for a part-time middle school special education teacher.

After several retirements at the elementary school, one of the part-time special education aides at the middle school applied for a full-time teaching position at the elementary school, and was selected for the job.

That leaves an opening at the middle school.

Because of the number of special education students at the middle school, Deskins said the district was close to being out of compliance with state special education guidelines regarding the ratio of staff to students.

The decision was made to replace the part-time aide with a part-time teacher.

“For just a slight difference in cost, we eliminate our concerns over compliance,” he said.

The board did not discuss other topics during the special meeting, which was over in a matter of minutes, Deskins said.
