Kart racers from the Archbold Area traveled to a track near the Ft. Wayne, Ind., airport, Friday night, July 25.
The paved oval at Ft. Wayne is short, but its turns are highly banked, making for fast speeds.
"It’s like flying fighter jets in a gymnasium," said John Huffman, veteran Archbold kart racer.
Jeremy Mann, 13, Archbold, ran in the junior gold plate (gas) class. While he had never been to the track before, he won both of the class heat races and finished second in the feature.
In addition, Mann won the promoter’s award for the night. The award goes to a racer who stands out during the night’s racing.
Vance Nofziger, Pandora, formerly of Archbold, ran in the senior econo class, and finished second in both of his heat races and the feature.
Stock heavy rules at Ft. Wayne allow karts to weigh a minimum of 360 pounds with driver.
Huffman said if he raced his kart, he would be giving the competition too much of an advantage.
So he called in Chris Wheeler, Wauseon, who races once or twice a year.
It turned out to be a good decision. Wheeler was second and fourth in heat races, but won the feature event, which was a special event that night.- information provided by John Huffman, written by David Pugh
