Klava Jelen



Klava Jelen, 87 years, of Archbold, passed away Monday evening, Sept. 9, 2013, at Fulton Manor in Wauseon.
Klava lived in Archbold for 16 years after moving from Union, N.J. Klava moved to Archbold after retiring as a telephone operator from New Jersey Bell Telephone Company.
Klava was born on Jan. 1, 1926, in Lipetsk, Russia, the daughter of Kyzma Paykov and Manja (Ponteleevna) Paykova.
She is survived by her sisters, Zoya Paykova and Valya Masluk; son, George (Michele) Jelen, Archbold; and daughter, Maria Jelen, Lincoln, Neb. Klava is also survived by granddaughters, Jenny Holsopple, Marysville, Bethany Jelen, Archbold; a grandson, Gregory Jelen, Lincoln, Neb., and a great-grandson, Asher Holsopple, Marysville.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Lubomir Jelenkovic, and sisters, Lida Kovalevskaja, Olga Paykova and Vera Lihman.
Klava was an avid reader, enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and had a lifelong passion for sewing.
Klava grew up in Donetsk, Ukraine. During WWII, when the Germans invaded the Ukraine, she was transported to Germany to work as a farm laborer.
After the war she lived in a displaced persons camp, where she met her husband, Lubomir Jelenkovic.
While in Germany she had two children. The family emigrated to the United States in 1951 and settled in Newark, N.J.
During the past 16 years she faithfully attended Archbold Evangelical Church.
Visitation will take place at the Grisier Funeral Home in Archbold on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, from 5-8 p.m. Graveside services will take place at the Pettisville Cemetery, east of the school, at 10 a.m., Monday, followed by a memorial service at Archbold Evangelical Church at 11 a.m., with Pastor Jesse Kahler and Elder Jerry Lugbill, officiating. A luncheon will follow.
The family requests that memorial contributions be given to the Christian Education Department at Archbold Evangelical Church.
