Archbold entertained Wauseon, Thursday, Oct. 24 for its final home game of the season. The Streaks won handily 26-6.

After allowing Wauseon to use 10 plays and 5:54 of the opening quarter to move the ball 65 yards for a touchdown, the defense stiffened the rest of the night. Trailing 6- 0, Archbold allowed only two first downs the rest of the game.

Bryce Williams, calling the signals, handed the ball to Ryan Trevino, who used a big block by Cash Gericke, turned the corner and followed Ben Zimmerman upfield for a 30-yard gain. On the next play, Williams threw to Gabe Petersen, who broke a tackle and was off to the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown to tie the score at 6. Brian Ball provided good pass protection.

Wauseon tried to trick the Archbold defense, but Nic Rodriguez and G. Petersen came down with an interception on the halfback pass.

Williams ran for 9 yards, then Williams threw to Sam Petersen for a 10-yard pass play. The duo hooked up for the touchdown and a 12-6 lead.

The Indians were determined to move the ball before halftime. With fourth down and inches for a first down, they ran the ball into the center of Archbold’s defense. Trevor Short, Gavin Grime and Logan Roth stopped the Indians short of the first down.

Archbold quickly went to work. Williams connected with Andrew Beck for 14 yards, Rodriguez for 20, and Trevino on a screen for 13 yards and a touchdown. Williams ran in the extra point try and gave the Streaks a 20-6 lead.

Zimmerman and Gericke led the defense the next series, making big plays. Dylan Miller put the final stop on the Wauseon drive and had a 7-yard sack on fourth-and-nine. Miller finished with three sacks and eight tackles.

Archbold punted to Wauseon after a stalled drive, and Wauseon was threatening after a 32-yard pass. Gericke had a sack for 7 yards, but the Indians countered with another long pass that looked like a touchdown. G. Petersen made a tremendous play on the ball and stripped it from the receiver at the 2. Roth recovered the fumble.

Williams threw to Beck for 14 yards, and a couple of short runs put the Streaks in the position of having to punt again. A fake punt did not work and Wauseon took over on downs. Again, the Archbold defense stuffed the visitors, and again, Miller came through with the sack.

Taking over late, Archbold went to its heavy offense and ran the ball down the field. Trevino ran for 13, Williams threw to G. Petersen for 10, and Williams, running for 9, put the Streaks in the red zone.

Trevor “Soup” Rupp and Camden Miller took over and pushed the Streaks into the end zone, with Rupp going the last 4 yards for the touchdown.

LC 40, Archbold 32

The Streaks traveled to Liberty Center to close out the season, Tuesday, Oct. 29, and came home on the short end of a 40-32 battle to finish 4-4.

LC opened with a 65-yard drive that ended with a touchdown and extra points for an 8-0 lead.

Archbold was forced to punt, but it was blocked. LC recovered, ran with the ball, but fumbled it back to the Streaks.

On third-and-10, Williams threw to G. Petersen for a 55-yard gain. From the 10, Williams scampered in for the score. The point after was no good, and LC led 8-6.

The Tigers took their next possession and scored again, using mostly runs, for a 14-6 lead.

After the two teams exchanged fumbles, S. Petersen ran for 10 yards and Williams ran for 11. Williams threw to Rodriguez, who was streaking past the defenders for the score to cut the difference to 14-12.

On the first play of its next drive, LC scored on a 65-yard screen pass. The PAT gave the Tigers a 22-12 lead just before halftime.

But with less than two minutes remaining in the first half, Archbold put together a great drive for a touchdown. Williams connected with three different receivers in the drive: Trevino for 20, S. Petersen for 20, and G. Petersen for a 23- yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 22-18.

The Streaks went to the air in the second half, with Williams throwing a screen to Trevino that he took 60 yards to the 5. In front of Trevino downfield were Roth, Gericke, Beck, and Colton Soles. Archbold took the lead, 24-22.

LC scored on its next two drives for a 40-24 lead late in the game.

Archbold’s last possession had G. Petersen throwing to Grime for a 40-yard touchdown.

“This is not what we were hoping for this season, but aside from the record, our kids grew up,” said Ryan Holdgreve, coach. “They matured as young men and became better football players, also. They will be fun for everyone to watch in the next four years at the high school level.

“This group is what the Archbold football statement states, ‘Good people and citizens first; good students second; and good football players.’ It has been a good year, and these young men need to learn you win league championships when you have all 26 of them playing at the varsity level the next four years.”

“As coach Holdgreve stated, it will be a fun group to watch play at the next level,” said Norm Beck, assistant coach.
