Archbold 8th Grade Girls Basketball

Archbold defeated Defiance 36-20, Monday, Jan. 7. The Streaks played a very good first half and led 24-6. “Everyone contributed in the victory by playing good defense, finding the open person for an easy basket, stealing the ball and rebounding,” said Nancy Moser, coach.

The team moved the ball quickly down the court for some baskets and had numerous steals to set up scores. Mindy Rupp and Tori Williams had 8 points each; Abby Short, 6; Carley Wyse, 5; Britt Wyse, 3; Chelsea Goebel, Morgan Cody, and Kristin Fonseca, 2 each.

Archbold had its running game in high gear as it defeated Patrick Henry 43-2, Thursday, Jan. 10. “Everyone contributed in some way to the final score as they passed the ball well, rebounded, played good ‘D,’ and scored,” said Moser. “The team was very unselfish with the ball as they recorded 20 assists.”

Scoring: Short, 10 points; Cody, 9 pts; C. Wyse and Ruthie Beck, 6 each; Rupp and Wyse, 4 each; Williams and Fonseca, 2 each.

Archbold Middle School Wrestling

The Archbold junior high wrestling team competed the weekend of Jan. 5 in the Patrick Barton Memorial Tournament in Oregon. There were 15 teams represented.

The Streaks ended third with 191 points. Archbold finished behind an extremely strong Oak Harbor team who won with 377.5 points and Sandusky Perkins, who was second with 201.5. Rounding out the top five were East Broadway, 178, and Gateway, 160.

Individual champions were Jordan Cowell, 128 pounds, and Zach Driver, 150 lbs. Cowell wrestled a very solid tournament, defeating Keegan Beaverson from Bowling Green in the semifinal with a fall in the second period. He then faced Dalton Cleghorn from Maumee Gateway in the final, pinning him in 2:10.

Driver also had a strong tournament, beating Allen Bose from Oak Harbor in the semifinal with a fall in 1:18. This advanced Zach to the final, where he faced an extremely physical Jay Tils from Eisenhower. Zach won 9-7.

Additional place finishers: 110 lbs., Austin Ripke, 2nd; 116 lbs., Oliver Stuckey, 4th; 122 lbs., Danny Young, 2nd; 142 lbs., Tyler Rufenacht, 2nd.
