The Blackbirds were defeated 2- 0, Monday, Sept. 17, by a strong Emmanuel Christian team. Unable to mount many offensive attacks, the Birds were forced to spend a good share of the game on defense.

James Eicher, John Rufenacht and Gabe Beck slowed down the Warriors’ strong forward, but could not shut him down totally.

Archbold 8th Grade Football

ArchboldreturnedtoactionThursday, Sept. 13, hosting Evergreen. The Streaks dropped to 0-3 with a tough 20-12 loss.

Both teams moved the ball but couldn’t score early. Evergreen eventually used a mix of pass and run to take an 8-0 lead after an interception.

The Streaks threw another interception and the visitors were within scoring range again.

Evergreen passed to the end zone, but Gabe Spiess and Bryce Huber broke up the play while Spiess came up with the ball and raced 102 yards for the touchdown.

The point-after-touchdown attempt was not good, and Evergreen led at the half 8-6.

Evergreen scored early in the second half to boost the lead to 14-6. When Archbold took possession, the Streaks ran behind Austin Wilson and Sean Rocha, reaching the Evergreen 45-yard line. Quarterback Isaiah Esquibel threw to Spiess, who followed Levi Carmody, Jaryd Hobbs and Elijah Esquibel to score. The PAT was no good, and Archbold trailed 14-12.

Evergreen scored late for the 20- 12 final.

Archbold traveled to Swanton, Thursday, Sept. 20. The Streaks played hard until the end, but came up short 10-6.

Neither team mounted much offense in the first half with the teams exchanging punts and turnovers. Big plays for the Streaks came from Cam Warncke on defense breaking up a pass play and Levi Rufenacht with some solid blocking. The first half ended scoreless.

Swanton scored first following an Archbold turnover. The extrapoint kick was good for a 7-0 lead. Archbold turned the ball over again, but solid defensive back play by Toby Walker and Elijah Alvarado forced the Bulldogs to punt.

Archbold couldn’t move the ball and Swanton took possession late in the game. With Andrew Wyse leading the Streaks’ defense, Swanton was faced with a fourth-and-13 from the 14-yard line. Swanton kicked a 32- yard field goal for a 10-0 lead with under four minutes to play.

Archbold attempted a long pass to Alvarado that was intercepted. Swanton was unable to move the ball and Archbold used time-outs to get the ball back. Not able to block the punt didn’t affect the Streaks as Isaiah Esquibel took the punt and raced 89 yards for a touchdown. The point after was no good, and the score stood at 10-6.

Swanton ran out the clock to preserve the win.
