Archbold 7th Grade Football

Archbold hosted Swanton, Thursday, Sept. 22. The Bulldogs prevailed 27-16.

Swanton won the toss and marched 60 yards to a touchdown by a mixture of runs and passes. The twopoint conversion was good for an 8-0 lead. The Bulldogs added another TD on a long pass and the Streaks were behind 14-0. Archbold cut into the lead on its next possession as Gabe Spiess broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and ran for a 57-yard TD. Quarterback Austin Welch ran in for a two-point conversion and tightened the gap to 14-8.

Swanton had one last opportunity to score before halftime, but a “Hail Mary” pass was picked off by Toby Walker as time expired.

The third quarter belonged to the Bulldogs as they controlled the ball and clock. They scored and kicked the extra point for a 21-8 lead.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Welch threw an out pass to Jacob Montes; he raced down the left sideline for a 51-yard scoring play. The two hooked up for the two-point conversion to bring Archbold within five, 21-16.

Swanton moved the ball to the Streaks’ 13-yard line with under five minutes left. However, on the next play Walker recovered a fumble and the Streaks had life. The offense moved the chains and got down to the Bulldog 30-yard line with under three minutes to play.

The Swanton defense came up with a big stop and the Streaks turned the ball over on downs. All Swanton had to do was to run out the clock, but the Bulldogs did more than that as their running back broke several tackles and scored to make the final score 27-16.
