Volleyball

Archbold def. Napoleon 25-19, 25-15, Tuesday, Sept. 21. Points won on serves: Winter Fricke 1, Erin Erbskorn 1, Cassidy Williams 2, Katie Wyse 3, Megan Miller 4, Hannah Yoder 6, Peyton Driver 2, Alexa Coressel 7, Hannah Hesterman 3. “This was a good way to start the week,” said Dina Gladieux, Archbold coach. “Napoleon was aggressive and the girls really had to battle for each point. It was great to see them have some long rallies.”

Archbold (8-1) def. Montpelier 25- 20, 25-20, Thursday, Sept. 23. Points won on serves: Fricke 6, Hannah Kern 7, Kennedy Wyse 4, Erbskorn 1, Williams 5, Katie Wyse 4, Miller 2, Driver 1, Coressel 1. “I depend on my setters to be my top servers, and this match showed that,” said Gladieux. “Hannah Kern, Winter Fricke, and Cassidy Williams are three of my four setters. It’s nice to see the girls develop confidence in their abilities as the season progresses. Alexa Coressel has been struggling with her attacks, so it was nice to see her have a number of aggressive spikes in game one.”

Archbold 7th Grade
Football

The Streaks battled to a 6-6 tie with Swanton in a hard-fought game, Thursday, Sept. 23. The Blue Streaks (2-1-1) were the first to score as the offense drove the ball on a 65- yard drive. It was capped by a pass from Derek Walker to Benny Gomez from 12 yards out. The two-point conversion was not successful.

Swanton scored on a 47-yard pass play, but was denied the two points as the front line of Mike Weigand, Tony Quintanilla, Conner Ginn, Lukas Rodriguez, and Mitchell Hogrefe had a strong surge to stop the running play.

Outstanding defensive play came from Quintanilla, who recovered a fumble; Derek Humbert, who caused a fumble on a punt and was recovered by Hogrefe; and Seth Mayer, who had a pass knockdown. Tackles for losses were turned in by Garrett Grime, Quintanilla, Walker, Hogrefe, Mayer, and Logan Liparoto.

Volleyball

Glass City Liberty Tournament,

Saturday, Sept. 18

Archbold def. Lake 25-14, 25-22. Points won on serves: Brooke Hines 2, Neila Kinsman 2, Sierra Lester 1, Anna Schoenhals 1, Maddy Smith 4, Madison Kohler 11, Cassi Wyse 2, Allie McQuade 7.

Archbold def. Toledo Christian 26-24, 21-25, 15-4. Points won on serves: Hines 2, Schoenhals 4, Smith 1, Kohler 8, Wyse 4, McQuade 7.

Championship: McCord def. Archbold 25-17, 25-19. Points won on serves: Kohler 2, Wyse 7, McQuade 7.

“What an exciting day,” said Cindy Clark, Archbold coach. “The girls played from their hearts today, and it showed on the court. Ellie Rupp, Neila Kinsman, and Sierra Lester had some breakthrough serves. Allie McQuade and Cassi Wyse both did an excellent job swinging aggressively at the net. This tournament gave us valuable experience to build on for the rest of our season.”

Archbold def. Napoleon 25-16, 25- 20, Tuesday, Sept. 21. Points won on serves: Hines 5, Schoenhals 2, Smith 16, Kohler 2, Wyse 2, McQuade 8. “Maddy Smith served with solid consistency and Grace Villanueva stepped up with some good passes at the net,” said Clark.

Archbold def. Montpelier 25-17, 25-19, Thursday, Sept. 23. Points won on serves: Hines 10, Kinsman 1, Schoenhals 4, Smith 3, Kohler 3, Wyse 5. “The girls battled to earn another victory, but I think they also realized the importance of teamwork,” said Clark. “Ellie Rupp helped us run our offense with some nice passes in the back row. Brooke Hines, Anna Schoenhals, and Cassi Wyse were also reliable servers for us tonight.”

Archbold 8th Grade
Football

Archbold hosted Evergreen, Thursday, Sept. 16, and dropped to 0-3 with a 42-22 loss.

Levi Wyse followed the lead block of Grant Rupp around right end and scored on the first play, going 65 yards for a touchdown. Brandon Goering went off of right tackle Hayden Galvan’s block for the extra points and an 8-0 lead.

After Evergreen scored several times for a 26-8 advantage, Wyse ran for 57 yards, but fumbled into the end zone. Logan Hogrefe recovered the fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point try failed. Evergreen scored on the next play and built the lead to 34-14 at halftime.

Goering forced a fumble on the Vikings’ first possession of the second half. Logan Baynes recovered to put Archbold in control at the Viking 42- yard line. The Streaks moved the ball into scoring position and Goering scored a TD with Wyse adding the extra points.

On the next possession, Baynes forced and recovered a fumble. The Streaks turned the ball over, and Evergreen put a final touchdown on the scoreboard for the 42-22 final.

Football

The Streaks opened the season on the road at Bryan, Thursday, Sept. 2, and came home on the short end of a 32-16 score. Bryan scored multiple times on counter plays as the Streaks struggled to get the ball carrier.

Levi Wyse was a bright spot as he ran for one score and caught a pass from Brandon Goering for Archbold’s only two touchdowns. Goering ran in both extra-point attempts to give Archbold its 16 points.

Archbold Cross Country

The Streaks traveled to Bryan, Tuesday, Sept. 21, for a tri-meet with Bryan and Defiance. The Archbold girls placed second with 55 points. Defiance won with 21; Bryan was third with 56.

In the boys race, Archbold was third with 70. Bryan won with 28, and Defiance scored 37. Archbold’s top runners were Matthew Kinsman and Demetria Martinez.

Pettisville Soccer

The Blackbirds were defeated 5- 1, Monday, Sept. 20, by Archbold’s U-14 boys club team. Pettisville’s lone score came early in the second half off a give-and-go from Jordan Bontrager to Josh Liechty.

Pettisville traveled to Toledo Tuesday, Sept. 21, for a rematch with Emmanuel Christian. The Warriors took an early 1-0 lead, but Pettisville evened the score late in the first half when Tate Kauffman sent a pass through to Bontrager, who outran the defense and threaded a shot past a diving keeper. The Birds lost, 3-1.

Archbold 8th Grade
Football

After a setback at the hands of Bryan, Napoleon came to town, Thursday, Sept. 9, for the final contest between the schools. With blocking from Zach Belknap and CJ Brubaker over the right side of the line, Levi Wyse ran for 47 yards on the opening play. Later in the drive, Brandon Goering threw to Wyse for a 19-yard touchdown. Goering’s pass to Matt Sevey added the extra points and an 8-0 Blue Streak lead.

Logan Hogrefe recovered a fumble to set up Archbold’s next drive. A Goering pass to Stephan Manahan put the Streaks deep into Napoleon territory, but they couldn’t score.

Later in the first half, Goering forced a fumble that Belknap recovered. Again, the Streaks could not move the ball. Goering hit Wyse for a 79-yard touchdown pass on the next drive, but failed on the pointsafter attempt. Archbold led 14-8.

With the Wildcats driving, defensive tackle Jeff Sparks ripped the ball from the Napoleon player and ran 43 yards. Goering scored from 22 yards, but the extra point try failed. Napoleon scored before halftime for a 20-16 score.

After Napoleon took a 24-20 lead, Goering ran 65 yards for a TD and threw the extra point pass to Matt Petersen to take the lead back, 28-24. Zach Meyer intercepted a pass to put a stop to Napoleon’s next drive.

Not able to drive the ball all night, the Wildcats used trick plays to score their next touchdown to retake the lead, 30-28. Archbold turned the ball over for a Napoleon touchdown and dropped to 0-2 with a 36-28 loss.
