Joan Sommer, 87, of Archbold, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, July 26, 2014 with family at her side.
She was born in Bluffton, Ohio on March 29, 1927, to Roy Hauenstein and Azelda (Keifer) Hauenstein.
She was a 1945 graduate of Pandora High School, Pandora, Ohio.
On Nov. 3, 1946, she married Clyde Sommer at St. John’s Evangelical & Reformed Church in Bluffton.
Joan’s two passions were gardening and spending time with her family. She was an ardent supporter of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Joan worked as a teacher’s aide and secretary in the Archbold Area School system. Joan also worked for the Village of Archbold for several years.
She was an active member of St. John’s Christian Church in Archbold, where she participated in numerous ladies groups and volunteered on countless occasions.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Clyde Sommer; children, Connie (Jeff) Smith, Angola, Ind., David (Jayne) Sommer, Springfield, Vt., and Kathy (Randy) Layton, Archbold.
She felt blessed to have six grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her grandson, D.J. Sommer; sister, Shirley (Hauenstein) Slabaugh; and brother, John Hauenstein.
Services will be held at St. John’s Christian Church in Archbold, today, Wednesday, at 11:30 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10 a.m.
