Janice Freyenberger

Janice Carolyn Freyenberger was born Dec. 29, 1932, at Archbold, Ohio, the daughter of Joseph Nicholas and Sarah Short Roth.

She graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1950 at Stryker High School in Stryker, Ohio.

She attended Goshen College in Goshen, Ind., where she met Joseph Dean Freyenberger. They were united in marriage at Central Mennonite Church in Archbold on Oct. 28, 1951.

Janice was a faithful member of Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, where she taught Bible School and Sunday School. She was active in Mennonite Women and Gideon’s International.

She volunteered at the Crowded Closet, WACO Community School, and Parkview Home.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren at the family pond. Other favorite pastimes included reading, gardening, quilting and traveling.

Janice died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, at her home south of Wayland, Iowa, following a battle with cancer.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph of Wayland; four daughters, Barbara Freyenberger of Iowa City, Iowa, Michelle (Douglas) Frederick of Kalona, Iowa, Carmen Martinez of Berwyn, Ill., Maria (Michael) Roth of Wayland; eight grandchildren, Anthony, David and Kellie Frederick, Adriana and Joseph Martinez, Abigail, Christian and Jackson Roth; one great-granddaughter, Isabelle Frederick; sister, Clela Helm of Trenton, N.J.; and brother, Herbert (Charlotte) Roth of Newville, Pa.

Preceding Janice in death were her parents; an infant daughter; one brother, Dorwin Roth; and two sisters, Verda Jetmore and Vera Roth.

A memorial fund has been established for Water for Life or the Gideon’s Auxiliary.
