Senior Graeme Jacoby made Pettisville school history when he scored the 1,000th point of his high school career, Saturday, Feb. 15, in the Bird Cage when the Birds hosted Wauseon.

He is only the ninth boys basketball player in Pettisville school history, and the first since 2000, to hit the 1000-point plateau.

“It’s a great individual accomplishment,” said Brian Leppelmeier, PHS head coach.

“Graeme has worked very hard. He’s a great teammate. I know I can speak on behalf of Graeme that it’s a team award; it’s a great reward for our program.

“It’s been a heck of a four years,” said Jacoby. “Coach Leppelmeier has given me the opportunity to do this.

“I can’t take credit for this by myself. I’ve played with some awesome teammates over the years, and I can never do it without the coaching staff or without my teammates.

“It’s a heck of an award, and I’m very, very happy.”

PHS 45, Fayette 37

Pettisville (14-7) kept its Buckeye Border Conference record perfect at 11-0 with a 45-37 win at Fayette, Friday, Feb. 14.

With the BBC title already secured, the Blackbirds were playing to remain unbeaten in conference play.

Fayette (11-10, 7-4 BBC) led 8-7 after one quarter. Pettisville took the lead for good in the second, outscoring the Eagles 11-9 to hold a slim 18- 17 advantage at the half.

The Birds exploded for 18 third-quarter points, converting four three-pointers with Max Leppelmeier accounting for nine of the points, to go up 36-27.

Fayette held a 10-9 advantage in the fourth but Pettisville earned its 11th BBC win 45-37.

Leppelmeier led all scorers with 16 points, including four treys. Mitchell Avina and Jacoby scored 12 points each.

Tanner Lemley and Elijah Lerma scored 13 and 12, respectively, for Fayette.

Pettisville shot 14-28 from the field for 50%, including seven three-pointers.

Fayette was 16-37 for 43%.

Wauseon 50, PHS 43

Wauseon (15-6) took a 14- 9 first quarter lead and was up 18-15 going into the half.

Jacoby needed only 13 points to hit the 1,000-point mark. With 4:52 left in the third, he scored his 14th point of the game, to go over 1,000 points in his high school career. He finished with 25 for the game.

Wauseon increased the lead to 10, 33-23, after three.

The Birds scored 20 points in the final quarter and got the difference down to five, but the Indians scored 17 to hold on for the 50-43 win.

“I think the turning point in the game was Wauseon’s start,” said B. Leppelmeier. “And I think the other turning point of the game was probably our first four possessions of the second half.

“We were single-digit turnovers (seven for the game), but I think we had some key ones that allowed Wauseon to stretch that lead to 10.

“We battled back, but… they knocked down some shots.”

Avina was the only other double-figure scorer for Pettisville, with 11 points.

Jonah and Noah Tester led the Indians with 23 and 15 points, respectively.
