Hulda M. Stipe, 91 years, of West Unity, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice, Defi- ance.

Hulda was born Feb. 20, 1919, in Cheraw, Colo., to the late Rev. John and Anna (Brubaker) Thut.

She married William Ted Stipe on March 20, 1954 in West Unity, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 22, 2009.

Raised in the Mennonite faith, she was a former member of the Jefferson Garden Club. Hulda was an avid gardener, growing vegetable gardens and flowers that just would not quit.

Hulda entered antiques and the flowers she grew in the Williams County Fair every year. She also had a knack for sewing and made many sets of clothes for her grandchildren’s dolls.

Surviving is her son, William “Bill” (Marcia) Stipe II of West Unity; daughter, Mary (Jeff) Brandon of Bryan; five grandchildren, Lindsay (Ryan) Smith of Nappanee, Ind., Michelle (Andrew) Waggoner of Evanston, Ill., Lexi Stipe of Bryan, Holden Stipe of West Unity, and Miranda Schutte of West Unity; one great-granddaughter, Liliana Smith of Nappanee, Ind.; one sister, Lois (Jack) Johnson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister-inlaw, Iris (R. Stanford) Short of Bryan; brother-in-law, Carl Beck of Archbold; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; brother, Abram Thut; three sisters, Esther Beck, Eunice Romack and Rachel Miller.

Memorial services for Hulda M. Stipe will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at Solid Rock Community Church, 102 Ely Drive, West Unity, with Pastor Fred Brandon officiating.

Friends and relatives may call one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

Private interment took place in Floral Grove Cemetery, West Unity.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 206 North Lynn Street, Bryan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution in the memory of Hulda M. Stipe may be given to the West Unity Parks Department to plant trees in Hulda’s memory.
