Blaney Huffman and Sydney Hageman, both of Archbold, were winners in the annual Fulton County Spelling Bee, Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Northwest Ohio Educational Service Center, Archbold.

Hageman is in the eighth grade at Archbold, while Huffman is in the fourth grade.

Special recognition was given to Lyla Heising, a freshman at Pettisville High School, who was awarded a plaque for her past accomplishments.

Heising qualified and participated in last year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., after winning the regional bee.

She also won the Fulton County Spelling Bees for her grade level in 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, and 2013.

She shared her experience with the audience and offered words of encouragement and advice to the spellers.

Thirty-eight students from Archbold, Evergreen, Fayette, Pike-Delta-York, Pettisville, Evergreen, Swanton, Wauseon, and Holy Trinity Catholic schools competed.

First-place winners for grades 4-8 advance to the Toledo Blade Spelling Bee at Owens Community College, Saturday, March 16.
