Hornish Finishes 20th At Phoenix

Sam Hornish, Jr., was the top finishing rookie at the Phoenix International Speedway, Saturday, April 12, finishing 20th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race on the one-mile short track.

The Archbold High School graduate and Indianapolis 500 winner started from the 31st position. By lap 100 of the 312- mile race he was running 40th.

Hornish was running in 24th place when the yellow flag waved and he pitted. His crew changed four tires, added fuel, and made air pressure and track bar adjustments. He restarted on lap 121 in 29th.

Just before the midpoint of the race the caution flag again came out, with Hornish slipping to 28th. He pitted and restarted in 32nd.

When the event came down to fuel mileage his team had played the right cards.

Hornish had enough fuel to finish without a fuel stop, advancing several positions as a result. He earned his second top-20 finish of the season as he took the checkered flag.

“We did what we needed to do today to make the car better,” said Hornish.

“We were able to keep up with the track and conserve fuel in the end and gain a lot of spots on the track.

“I’m happy to have another top 20, and we will continue this momentum as we head to Talladega.”

The team heads to Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, Sunday, April 27 for the second restrictor plate race of the season.
