Sam Hornish Jr., 1998 Archbold High School graduate, Indianapolis 500 winner, and National Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) driver, finished 22nd in Sunday’s race at Michigan International Speedway.
His crew spent the day chasing chassis adjustments to perfect his car’s handling.
Then late in the race, debris clogged his car’s grill, blocking airflow to the radiator and causing engine temperature to rise dangerously, forcing an unscheduled pit stop.
He was running on the lead lap, with three laps to go, when his car spun out of control on turn four. He was able to straighten out his car and continue, finishing 22nd.
He did record a series of "firsts" Sunday.
It was his first race in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series at Michigan’s two-mile, D-shaped oval, and twice he led the race. He also made his first greenflag pass for the lead in Sprint Cup action, passing past series champ Jimmie Johnson on lap 162.
It was also his first father’s day as a father. Hornish and his wife, the former Crystal Liechty of Archbold, welcomed daughter Addison Faith Hornish to their family, Monday, Feb. 4.
