Hilltop, Ayersville Run Past Blackbirds

Pettisville played host to Buckeye Border Conference foe Hilltop in a league contest, Friday, Jan. 29, and came up short, 76-56.

The Blackbirds took to the road to battle Ayersville, ranked second in Division IV by the Associated Press, and dropped a 52-26 decision.

The losses drop the Birds’ record to 5-12, 4-3 BBC.

Hilltop 76, PHS 56

The Cadets (11-6, 6-1 BBC) got into a rhythm and led start to finish to stay one game behind Fayette (7-0 BBC) in the BBC.

Despite seven first-quarter points by Gabe Beck, Hilltop responded to lead 20-11 after one.

Hilltop went to a full-court trap in the second quarter that forced the Blackbirds into numerous turnovers.

An 8-0 run by the Cadets spanning the end of the first and beginning of the second was stopped by an Evan King jumper.

Both teams traded baskets in the high-scoring quarter. Leading 31-19, the Cadets ran off seven straight points for a 38-19 advantage.

Trailing by 19, Beck and Dillon King each hit a pair of free throws, but back-to-back three-pointers by Hilltop gave the Cadets their biggest lead of the night, 44-23.

The Blackbirds went into the locker room down 46-26.

Pettisville showed some life in the third quarter. D. King scored seven points in an 11-2 run to cut the lead to 48-37.

Hilltop replenished the lead with a 14-6 run to end the third, taking a 62-43 advantage into the final quarter.

The Cadets outscored PHS 9-2 early in the fourth to put the game out of reach, 71- 45.

Pettisville pulled its starters from the game with three minutes left while Hilltop pulled its starters with over a minute remaining.

The Birds then outscored the Cadets 11-5 to end the night on the losing end, 76-56.

Beck led PHS with 23 points. D. King added 11.

Hilltop’s Tim Maneval led all scorers, with 35 points, including four of the team’s seven three-pointers. Quinn Smith pitched in 18 and Ryan Brooker, 11.

Pettiville committed 26 turnovers while the Cadets had 21.

Ayersville 52, PHS 26

It was Homecoming for the Pilots as Pettisville took another one on the chin, getting doubled up in defeat.

The Pilots (15-1) led 10-6 after one and 21-12 at the half.

Shooting only 26% from the field in the contest, Pettisville was outscored 31-14 in the second half.

Beck led Pettisville with 10 points. D. King scored nine.

Ayersville’s Ethan Schlachter led all scorers, with 11.

The Birds committed 19 turnovers to Ayersville’s 11, and were out-rebounded 29- 24.
