Herman J. Liechty

Herman J. Liechty, age 88 years, of Archbold, passed away Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, in his home.

He was born Oct. 4, 1920, near Pettisville, the son of Joseph and Emma (Frey) Liechty. He married Doris Schertz on May 22, 1945, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 3, 2001.

A lifelong resident of the Archbold area, he, with his brother Harold, owned and operated the former Liechty Bros. Construction for 18 years, and later founded Liechty Specialties in Archbold.

He served in Civilian Public Service during W.W. II, and was active in Mennonite Disaster Service.

He was a former board member of Fairlawn Haven, and Cherry Street Mission many years.

He was a member of the West Clinton Mennonite Church near Pettisville.

He is survived by seven children, Carolyn (Galen) Wenger of Little Rock, Ark., Allen (Ginny) Liechty of Archbold, Phyllis (Myrl) Nofziger of Goshen, Ind., Eric (Debbie) Liechty of Cold Spring, Ky., Barbara (Jay) Detweiler, Rachel (Kurt) Eby, and Rita (Jud) Gingrich, all of Goshen, Ind.; 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold (Treva) Liechty of Archbold, and Russel (Marjorie) Liechty of Goshen, Ind.; and one sister, Lorraine Wyse of Archbold.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a granddaughter; three brothers, Donald Liechty, Wesley Liechty and Wayne Liechty; two sisters, Mary Smucker and Doris Lehman.

Memorial services will be held today, Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m. at the West Clinton Mennonite Church with Pastor Tim Lehman officiating. Interment will precede in the Pettisville Cemetery.

Short Funeral Home in Archbold was entrusted with the arrangements.

The family suggests that memorials be given to Mennonite Mission Network.
