Henry County passed a grim milestone Monday, July 27, with the announcement that the county suffered its first death due to COVID- 19, the illness caused by the Coronavirus.
In a press release, the Henry County Health Department said the victim was a man in his 80s.
Bethany Wachter, health communications specialist for the HCHD, said the man was a resident of a nursing home in Henry County.
She confirmed that the death was not connected with an event at a Napoleon-area winery where more than 50 people contracted the virus.
“The majority of cases in Henry County are not related, and therefore are considered community spread, meaning the virus is circulating throughout our county,” the press release said.
Wachter said, “This being our first death, it’s just a little bit of a wake-up call as to just how serious this can be.
“I know he was in his 80s, but anytime anybody passes from COVID, it’s devastating.”
Wachter said with the first death, people should realize “how important it is to keep doing those prevention measures, to keep everybody wearing those masks, to social distance, to do all those things.
“Unfortunately, death is the ultimate consequence of this virus.”
