Irena Henricks is the May Resident of the Month at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home, Archbold.

One of 15 children, she was born April 27, 1917, to William and Amanda Osterhourt, Delta. She and her sister, Ruby, are the only living members of the family.

All the children learned to work, making gardens, canning, cooking, baking, washing clothes, and cleaning. They walked a half-mile to school. Irene attended eight grades at the Raker School.

Irena was introduced to a young man by her brother when she was a young lady. She and her husband, Donald, were married on Aug. 24, 1934, in the home of the Nazarene preacher. They lived with her parents for two years before moving.

They had nine children: Joann, Joyce, Lonnie, Roger, Terry, Richard, Peggy, Larry, and Bill. She remembers sewing many dresses for the girls.

After the children were older, she worked at the Wire Factory in Wauseon for 25 years. Donald worked at the Pet Milk Company in Delta. They lived in Arizona for several years after retirement before moving back to northwest Ohio. Donald died on Feb. 25, 2000.

Irena came to live at Fairlawn Haven on Dec. 1, 2006. She enjoys all the activities, plays solitaire, and watches television when not at meals and programs.
