Helen M. (Geesey) Beatty, age 101, formerly of West Unity, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008 at Fairlawn Haven in Archbold.
She was born on Nov. 3, 1907, on the Geesey Homestead on East Plank Road to John Clarence Geesey and Minnie (Misel).
After graduating in 1925 at West Unity High School, Helen then attended Bowling Green Normal School for two years of teachers training.
Her first position came in a one room schoolhouse in Zone School in Fulton County, where she not only taught all eight grades, but was also the janitor, arriving early to fire-up the stove.
In 1947, Helen accepted a teaching position in the West Unity Schools. She was a local school board member in this district and not only guided the education of the children from the classroom, but also from the front office.
Later, Helen taught in Elmira, and then finished her 36 years of teaching in the Archbold Schools. She loved every minute of her teaching journey, helping children to mature into contributing citizens of the community.
Family, church, traveling across country and school has always been Helen’s focus.
Memberships include the West Unity United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women’s Group, and the Williams County Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include one son, C. Richard (Beverly) Mann of Bryan; two granddaughters, Pamela Mann of Bryan, and Gretchen (Matt) Walker of Delphi, Ind.; two great-granddaughters, Abigail Walker and Elizabeth Walker of Delphi.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Beatty; three brothers, Donald, Ralph, and Charles Geesey; two sisters, Mildred Salter and Frieda Figgins.
Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Orr Funeral Home in West Unity. Burial was in Floral Grove Cemetery, West Unity. Memorials may be made to West Unity United Methodist Church or Quadco Senior Activity Fund, 427 North Defiance St., Stryker, OH 43557. www.orrfh.com.
