Archbold’s Gavin Grime won the 145-pound championship at the Maumee Bay Wrestling Classic at Clay High School, Friday-Saturday, Jan. 12-13.
Six wrestlers competed for the Streaks.
Zach Rocha (132 lbs.) placed eighth to also finish on the podium.
Brennan Short (138 lbs.), Colton Soles (152 lbs.), Kasyn Schaffner (170 lbs.), and Trevor Short (220 lbs.) competed but did not place.
Archbold finished 22nd as a team, scoring 53 points.
Elyria won the tournament with 213.5 points.
Wauseon was second with 184, followed by Oregon Clay 182.5, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy 121, Medina and Bedford (Mich.) 109.5 (tie).
Grime Wins Title
Grime, the number-one seeded wrestler in the 145- lb. weight class, dispatched of Springfield’s Josh Marano with a fall in 1:22.
The senior defeated Berea’s Spencer Reardon by fall in 44 seconds to reach the quarterfinals against Wauseon’s Mauricio Barajas.
Grime advanced with a 1- 0 decision.
In the semifinals, Grime defeated Maumee’s Justin Schneider 6-1.
Grime squared off against Clay’s Garret Anderson in the finals, and led 3-1 in the closing seconds when Anderson scored the tying takedown to go into overtime.
The first takedown in the one-minute overtime would determine the winner.
Grime got the takedown to earn the hard-fought 5-3 sudden victory win.
Long Fight To Placement
Rocha took the long way to eighth place after dropping his first match to Anthony Wayne’s Zack Snyder in overtime, 7-3.
In the consolation bracket, Rocha defeated Dominic Torio of Olentangy by fall and won a 7-6 decision over Sandusky’s Elijah Hunter.
After defeating Whitmer’s Cameron Piercy 10-6 in another overtime match, Rocha lost 6-5 to Devin Wood of Central Crossing, putting him into the seventh place match, where he dropped a 3-0 contest to Evan Overholser of Kettering Fairmont.
