Goodwin’s Handgun Legislation Needed

Is an 18-year-old member of the United States military old enough to own a handgun? Bruce Goodwin, Republican State Representative from Defiance, says 18- to 21-year-olds in the military should be allowed to own hand guns, if properly trained.

He believes so strongly about young males and females owning a handgun, that he recently introduced legislation allowing them to buy guns.

Under current Ohio law, 18- to 21- year-olds can purchase handguns if they receive proper training and are employed in law enforcement. Others are prohibited from purchasing a handgun.

Goodwin’s bill gives eligible members of the armed forces or Ohio National Guard the ability to purchase a handgun, if they have completed proper training. The legislator recently testified on House Bill 250, his bill, before the Ohio House Criminal Justice Committee.

Two words, proper training, are the most important words in Goodwin’s proposal.

No one of any age should be allowed to own a handgun unless properly trained, tested, and they are mature enough to own one.
