M&R Redi-Mix, a readymix concrete company based in Pettisville, has been purchased by The Gerken Company, Napoleon.
The sale was effective Jan. 1, 2019. Terms of the sale were not announced.
In addition to a facility in Pettisville, M&R had facilities in McClure and Stony Ridge.
Mandy M. Gerken-Snyder, corporate council for The Gerken Company, said M&R will become a division of Gerken, to be known as M&R Redi-Mix Trucking, Inc, and will continue to operate out of all three locations.
“Gerken is known for its asphalt paving services and production, and now will add concrete ready-mix production to its growing list of services,” Gerken-Snyder said.
Julian Gerken, a Napoleon native, started his own asphalt business in 1959 after years of farming, military service, and working with the family excavating business.
The company has continuously expanded.
An aggregate production operation on the Maumee River was acquired in the late 1960s and early 1970s, which included a dredge operation, removing sand from the Maumee riverbed.
In 1989, a limestone quarry near Bluffton was added, followed by a second stone quarry near Custar in 1994, a paving company from Toledo in 1998, and a materials company in West Millgrove in 2007.
In addition to M&R Redi- Mix, Gerken-Snyder said Gerken subsidiary Bluffton Paving, located in Allen County, purchased the assets of Fritchie Asphalt & Paving, Lima, with an effective date of Jan. 16.
Gerken-Snyder said the company has over 400 employees in northwest Ohio and southeastern Michigan.
