Future Looks Good For Archbold

It was not total gloom and doom, but the final editorial in this newspaper last year was not optimistic. Amazingly, the past 12 months provided positive events that were unexpected.

The total job count in the community is down because a couple more industries closed, but the picture could be worse. Job losses in Ohio and Michigan are among the highest in America.

The announced closing of the ConAgra plant in Archbold did not happen. One year ago there seemed to be no chance the closing could be avoided. Thanks to the hard work of village officials, employees of the local plant, ConAgra officials, and state officials, it did not take place.

The cooperative effort saved the jobs and the industry. Village officials worked with company officials, union leaders, and anyone else that was interested in keeping the local food processing plant here. It was a successful effort.

The village, county, state, and local school system will continue receiving tax monies from the manufacturer. ConAgra officials discovered many reasons to keep the plant open in Archbold.

Some call the effort a miracle. Others describe it as a fine example of people working together to keep jobs and revenue right here in German Township.
