Julie Nofziger, Archbold head volleyball coach, welcomes back four letterwinners for her sixth year at the helm of the Blue and Gold and 26th year of coaching.
She lost four letterwinners from last year’s squad that finished 23-2 and laid claim to a Northwest Ohio Athletic League title with a perfect 8-0 record.
“The seniors we lost were three- and four-year letterwinners, so it will take some time to gain experience with our outside hitters and defensive specialist,” said Nofziger.
“We need to focus on our passing and digging game.”
Back are Lauren Kern, a senior; and Devin Newman, Emily Snyder and Stacy Wyse, juniors.
Snyder, a middle hitter, was Honorable Mention All- NWOAL; Wyse, a setter, earned Second Team District 7 honors and was First Team All- NWOAL.
Look for Kern on the right side and Newman as a middle hitter.
“We have a small core of experience back, but have definitely lost some consistency in our offensive game,” said Nofziger.
“We hope to be a little quicker defensively, but we have new kids in many different roles, so we will have to learn quickly to stay competitive.
“One goal we have is to become a better blocking team. We will really need to focus on our passing and digging game.”
Nofziger thinks the league will be pretty balanced, and that Swanton, Liberty Center, and Wauseon will be in the hunt for the league title.
“We will have to play our best matches against all of the league schools this year,” said the coach, who is assisted by Dale Grime.
Kristin Shields is the junior varsity coach, while Jen Hurst is the freshman coach.
Archbold hosts Montpelier in its season opener, Tuesday, Aug. 26.
