Mario J. Flores, 44, Archbold entered guilty pleas to two counts of sexual battery, Tuesday, Oct. 12.
Currently free on his own recognizance, Flores is scheduled to appear in Fulton County Common Pleas Court at 3 pm, Wednesday, Oct. 27, for sentencing.
He faces up to 10 years in prison, mandatory post-release control for five years, plus sex offender registration for the rest of his life.
Flores was originally indicted June 21 on 14 counts of sexual battery. He was arrested the following day and held on $100,000 cash bond at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio, until he was released Oct. 12.
During a July 2 arraignment hearing, Paul Kennedy, assistant Fulton County prosecuting attorney, said Flores had admitted to the conduct charged in the indictment.
In a press release, Scott Haselman, Fulton County prosecuting attorney, said the first count alleged Flores “engaged in sexual conduct with a minor when Flores was a person with temporary or occasional disciplinary control over said minor.”
Haselman said prosecutors planned to present evidence that:
•Flores was the minor’s driver education instructor;
•Flores was a leader of two mission trips to Jamaica that the minor attended;
•Flores was a leader of the Fellowship for Christian Athletes meetings at Archbold High School that the minor attended;
•Flores led weekly Bible studies at his home, which the minor attended.
•Flores took the minor to the Northwest Ohio Juvenile Detention Facility, rural Stryker, to provide chapel services to detainees.
The second count alleged Flores engaged in sexual conduct with the same victim, an Archbold High School student, when he was “a person serving in the school.”
Haselman said prosecutors were planning to point out Flores volunteered as the AHS weight room director.
The press release did not give specific dates, but based on the indictment, all of the offenses occurred sometime between Dec. 6, 2008, and March 29, 2009.
After his arrest June 23, he had an initial appearance in Common Pleas Court on June 25. His bond was set at $100,000 cash. A 10% bond was not allowed.
He was arraigned July 2. At that hearing, a two-day trial was set to start Sept. 14.
Then on Sept. 8, that trial date was pushed back to Oct. 12, when the guilty plea was entered.
The court will classify Flores as a Tier III sex offender. Ohio has three tiers of sex offenders, with the third being the highest. As a Tier III offender, he must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, or 99 years.
He must verify his residence and employment every 90 days, and must notify the sheriff of any change of address.–David Pugh
