The Pettisville volleyball team, under the guidance of John Horning, returns five letterwinners from a squad that finished 21-5 and took the Buckeye Border Conference title with a perfect 10-0 mark last season.
“This year’s team is hard working and has a ‘team’ attitude,” he said.
“Another of our strengths is serving. With that said, we have players in new positions.
“I see us being competitive in all of our matches this season. I believe our league should be very competitive.”
Back are seniors Dana Fricke, First Team All-BBC, and Jordyn Pursel, Second Team All-BBC; juniors Stephanie Hubby, Second Team All-BBC, Kate Kauffman, Honorable Mention All-BBC; and Amber Klopfenstein.
“We want to improve every day and take the season one match at a time,” said Horning.
“The girls have worked very hard so far, and we hope to be playing our best ball at the end of the season.”
Horning has spent eight seasons at the helm of the Blackbirds and has compiled a 137-59 record.
Last year’s squad bowed out in the district finals.
Assisting with coaching duties are Rebecca Dorosz; Glenn Christiansen, junior varsity; and Rachel Horning, freshmen.
Lost to graduation were Emily Hubby, BBC Player of the Year; Brooke Waidelich, Honorable Mention All-BBC; Shelby Miller; and Yari Coronado.
The Birds open their season, Thursday, Aug. 21, at home against Holgate.
