The Archbold FFA attended the Farm Science Review in London, Ohio, Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Some members visited the Gwynn Conservation Area to help study for upcoming soil judging competitions. The students were able to see the latest technology, methods and equipment used in the agricultural industry.

Wet weather did not allow them to see many of the demonstrations, which usually are well-attended events. Archbold students were part of the total crowd of 133,734 that attend in a three-day period.

Fulton County Soil Judging

Fulton County Soil Judging took place, Friday, Sept. 23, with 41 students taking part.

The freshmen participated in the Rural Soil Judging competition, while sophomores participated in the Urban Soil Judging contest.

Also participating were a number of upperclassmen.

Members had to rate the soil on how well the particular area was suited for farming practices, and made recommendations on how to conserve both topsoil and soil moisture in the Rural contest.

The Urban-area contest is judged on how well the soil will support structures like buildings with basements, septic tanks, roads and driveways, as well as lawns and gardens.

After identifying the limitations the soil had for each area, FFAers recommended how to improve the ground, and use it within its limitations. Archbold Urban team members placed first in the county.

District Soil Judging

District Soil Judging took place Thursday, Sept. 29 in Ottawa County. The eight students with the highest scores from the county contest in both the Rural and Urban contests participated as the team from Archbold.

District Soil Judging had sites that contained soils of differing types and textures in each pit, so a higher knowledge of the limitations is needed to rate each pit correctly.

The District event also has a test that involves using a soil survey to find the different information on the soils contained within the county.

The District Urban team of Ella Weaver, Ben Eggers and Kyle Wesche placed first. The Rural team of Ethan Wiemken, Jeff Litogot, and Hannah Hesterman placed 10th.

Individually, Weaver placed first in the urban contest and Wiemken placed fifth in the rural contest.

State Soil Judging

The Urban team of Weaver, Wesche, Eggers, and Taylor Dickman participated in the State Soil Judging contest, Saturday, Oct. 8, and placed 40th.
