Many CDEs (career development events) have taken place at Pettisville High School this fall.

The Pettisville FFA has participated in urban and ag soils, agronomy, dairy products, and dairy cattle judging CDEs.

The district urban and ag soils CDE was on Thursday, Oct. 2. The urban soils team placed sixth. There were eight members on the team. Pettisville’s top three were Taylor Kruse, 17th; Adriane Bruner, 18th; and Zach Pursel, 26th. Other members were Nate Betz, Logan Beck, Aaron Bruner, Luke Meller, and Arrin Short.

The ag soils team placed second, and advanced to the Oct. 11 state competition. Eight members participated. Pettisville’s top three were Harris King, 2nd; Ashley Eicher 6th; and Kayla King, 7th. Other members were Mackenzie Nofziger, Alex Donnett, Lucas Nofziger, Krista Spiess, and Emily Herring.

The team placed 43rd at state, with three members participating. Donnett placed 28th as an individual.

Soils teams view soil pits and select management practices to improve the site for farming or urban uses such as basement, roads and septic systems.

The agronomy team placed fourth in District 1. Pettisville’s top three were Rachel Fry, 22nd; Rebekah Meller, 25th; Lynae Fry, 35th. Other members were Michael Burkholder, Katie Weber, Tim Spiess, Dylan Weirauch, and Charlie Nofziger.

The team has the chance to compete in the spring at the state level. The agronomy team identifies plants, insects, diseases and seeds, finds information in the agronomy guide, and does a field plan as a team.

The dairy products team placed eighth. Pettisville’s top three were Zach Pursel, 20th; Vicki Nofziger, 28th; and Nathan Beck, 40th. Other members were Nate Betz, Dylan Weirauch and Sarah McDermott.

Team members identify cheese, milk flavors, real dairy products and problems in milking equipment. They also take a test and do a milk pricing practicum.

The dairy cattle judging team placed 11th. Pettisville’s top three were Taylor Kruse, 21st; Luke Meller, 23rd; and Lucas Nofziger, 23rd. Other members were Adi Bruner, Sarah Aeschliman, Rebekah Meller, Travis Beck and Rachel Beck.

The team places two classes of live animals, two cows as classified using the linear scale, places pedigrees, and takes a test.- Mackenzie Nofziger, reporter
