Despite getting trounced 17-2 and 15-4 by the Streaks in a doubleheader during the regular season, Fairview rallied from a 5-2 deficit and knocked off top-seeded Archbold 6-5 in a Division III sectional baseball final at Archbold, Wednesday, May 15.
Riding a six-game win streak, the Apaches (11-9) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
The Streaks bounced right back, scoring one run in the bottom of the inning, two more in the third, and two in the fourth for a 5-2 lead.
The Apaches closed the gap to 5-4 with two runs in the fifth, then took the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh that held for the one-run victory.
Tyson Schnitkey took the loss. In 2/3 inning he gave up one run on one hit, struck out two, and walked one.
Michael Walker pitched in relief. In 6 1/3 innings he gave up five runs on eight hits, struck out seven, and walked one.
Archbold had eight hits, and was led by Micah Bernath with two singles and one run batted in. Schnitkey had a single, double, and two RBIs, and Jacob Wagner had an RBI double.
“This loss wasn’t because our guys took Fairview lightly,” said Dick Selgo, AHS head coach.
“We knew they were one of the hottest teams in the area the past two weeks.
“The biggest problem was not being able to put the game away when we had a chance. We had them down 5-2 with numerous chances to build on that lead, but couldn’t drive in runners when we needed to.
“It’s a tough way to close out a very good season.”
