Evelyn Gae Pittman Watkins

Evelyn Gae Pittman Watkins was born April 15, 1924 in Damascus Township, Henry County, to Francis and Jewell (Johnson) Pittman, and died Aug. 14, 2008 at Fairlawn Haven in Archbold.

She married Richard (Dick) Watkins on Dec. 10, 1944.

A woman who placed a high value on education, family, and service, in the 1960s, with eight children at home, Evelyn returned to college at Bowling Green State University, earning her Bachelor’s degree in education in 1969.

Mrs. Watkins taught various grade levels from first grade through high school in local school districts, including Wauseon, Pike-Delta-York, and the Four County Joint Vocational School.

Following retirement, Dick and Evelyn founded Watkins Tours and led tours for retirees, traveling to many locations throughout the United States and Canada.

Evelyn worked in a variety of locations and occupations: Campbell’s Soup, several retail stores, agriculture, Sauder Village, and homemaking. She was also very active in the Archbold United Methodist Church, singing alto in the choir, participating in women’s Bible study and United Methodist Women, assisting with thrift sales and educational programs.

In addition to local church activities, Evelyn and Richard escorted work groups to many United Methodist missions, including Jackson Area Ministries (Appalachian Ohio), the Friendly Center and Cherry Street Mission in Toledo, programs in the Dayton area, and flood relief along the Ohio River. They also led groups to work projects in Arizona, Arkansas, Kentucky, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and West Virginia.

Her hobbies included sewing, crocheting, gardening, baking, and playing the piano. She was known to be outgoing, cheerful, helpful, and fun-loving. Evelyn was very proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She enjoyed visiting with people, being with people, and added a spark of life to any occasion.

Preceding her in death: her parents, twin sister Marilyn Mae, brother Bernard, infant daughter Carolyn, and infant son Robert.

Evelyn is survived by her husband, Richard, resident of Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home in Archbold, and children Eloise (Robert) Griteman of Liberty Center, Anna of Albuquerque, N.M., Karl (Jo) of Mason City, Iowa, Ralph of Silver Spring, Md., Peg of Delaware, Pat of Kent, Jim of Bryan, and Ruth of Berkeley, Calif. In addition, survivors include 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, many cousins, nephews and nieces.

The family would like to thank all of those who have supported or participated in Mom and Dad’s mission work in the past. A scholarship fund was created to support mission opportunities through the Maumee Watershed District of the United Methodist Church in honor of Richard and Evelyn Watkins.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Fairlawn Chapel with Rev. David David officiating. Interment was in the Hockman Cemetery at McClure.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Archbold United Methodist Church or directly to the Watkins Mission Scholarship Fund through the Maumee Watershed District of the United Methodist Church.

Short Funeral Home in Archbold was in charge of the arrangements.
