Eleven Streaks Place At NWOAL Wrestling Meet

Eleven Archbold Blue Streaks placed in respective weight classes at the Northwest Ohio Athletic League meet at Archbold High School, Saturday, Feb 12.

Ben Eggers (103 pounds) placed second, falling to Delta’s Kyle Keller with an 18-3 technical fall in the championship match.

Logan Day (119 lbs.) lost a 6-2 decision to Wauseon’s Cody Pontious in the championship match to finish second.

Tyler Rufenacht (171 lbs.) worked his way into the championship match, where he was pinned by Wauseon standout Nick McCall to place second.

Placing third were TJ Weirauch (125 lbs.), Cody Kovensky (160 lbs.), and Kellen Seaman (189 lbs.).

Finishing fourth were Justin Arce (112 lbs.) and Kenny Price (135 lbs.).

Clayton Lehman (145 lbs.) was down 8-1 in the second period but pinned Evergreen’s Carlos Sanchez for fifth. Jacob Strong (215 lbs.) and Brandon Dennie (285 lbs.) also placed fifth.

“I thought Kenny Price wrestled a good tournament,” said Brian Becher, AHS head coach. “He beat the Lamberson kid from Montpelier, a big strong senior, and he bumped up a weight class.

“For a freshman to bump up and wrestle two big matches is big. I am sure Kenny isn’t happy with his performance, but he is another kid that is doing anything extra to get better and it is paying off.

“With the end of the regular season, we haven’t had any disappointments. We are still young, with just two seniors (Weirauch and Dennie) wrestling in the tournament today. I know they are not happy with their performance today, so they have to pick it up and get ready for sectional. You know, this is their last hoorah.

“The younger kids are feeding on each other, and we have had good practices. I hope we pick it up hard next week. I would like to have a sectional championship next weekend.”
