Eashes Back In Wauseon After W. Va. Auto Crash

Sanford and Linda Eash, the Wauseon couple who were injured in a West Virginia car crash, Thursday, April 17, are now rehabilitation patients at Fulton Manor, Wauseon.

In the same accident, Edna E. Eash Nofziger, 90, Pettisville, and her daughter, Mary Ellen Kempf, 68, Fayette, were killed.

Bridget (Mrs. Junior) Eash, Napoleon, a daughter-in-law to Sanford, 72, and Linda, 60, said the couple had been patients at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W. Va. They were transported via ground ambulance to Fulton Manor, Saturday, May 10. Both are scheduled to undergo rehabilitation.

“They’re both very happy to be home, and we were happy to have her home for Mother’s Day,” Bridget said.

She said Sanford suffered 21 broken ribs (there are 24) and a broken sternum, or breastbone.

Yet, Bridget said he could get up and walk short distances using a walker.

Linda suffered two broken legs, a broken ankle or foot, and a fracture in her neck. She is wearing a neck brace.

The Crash

Bridget said the four Eash family members were returning from a funeral in Virginia when the crash occurred.

They were traveling east on W.Va. Rt. 9, near Hedgesville, when a minivan, driven by Darrell Russ, Jr., 28, Hedgesville, with passenger Crystal Gilbert, 25, same address, was traveling west.

A press release from the Berkeley County (W.Va.) Sheriff Department said the minivan crossed the center line, and collided head-on with the Eash auto.

Nofziger and Kempf were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Charges

Robert Grove, a deputy with the Berkeley County Sheriff Department, said at the accident scene, Russ told him and other deputies he (Russ) had taken the prescription pain killer Percocet.

Grove said Russ failed three field sobriety tests, and was placed under arrest on a charge of DUI resulting in death.

He is being held at the Eastern Regional Jail, Martinsburg, W.Va. on $100,000 bond.- David Pugh
